Workshop: Suzuki Technique
Saturday December 9th, 2017
Information:
A Suzuki Technique Workshop with Peter Balkwill of The Old Trout Puppet Workshop*

The Suzuki method works to build an actor’s awareness of his body, especially his centre – the epicentre of one’s vita energy. The method uses exercises that are inspired by and from classical Japanese theatre forms, martial arts and conventional movement exercises. The work requires great amounts of energy and concentration. The result in the actor is a heightened awareness of their natural expressiveness, drawing strength from the collective energy of the ensemble, allowing them to commit more fully to the physical and emotional requirements of acting.

Peter Balkwill is a co-artistic director, and director of workshops at the Old Trout Puppet Workshop in Calgary, Alberta. He holds a Master of Fine Arts in acting from the University of Washington in Seattle, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in theatre from University of Victoria. While studying he focused almost exclusively on the physical application of theatre – while at U Washington he studied the modalities of Tadashi Suzuki extensively over three years. All work ties to a series of ideas that move towards articulation within the silent narrative - clarity first without text - and the physical unity of an ensemble.

*Founded on a ranch in southern Alberta in 1999, The Old Trouts lived communally and premiered their first show to a bunkhouse full of cowboys and Hutterites, eventually re-locating the company to Calgary. Since its creation, Famous Puppet Death Scenes has subsequently toured across the world, delighting a global audience with The Old Trouts dramatically engaging and visually stunning aesthetic.
